Are Social Security disability benefits taxable?

Most people who are earning Social Security disability benefits do not have enough income to pay any income taxes. As explained in this video by Cuddigan Law, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits are not usually taxable because it is a program for individuals with little or no income (Note: Not affiliated with Social Security In 30 Minutes or publisher i30 Media Corporation). Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI ) benefits, however, are usually taxable.

SSDI and SSI at the same time: is it possible?

By Tips

While it is possible to claim SSDI and SSI at the same time, it is unlikely that you will be able to do so. As Social Security Disability Attorney Jonathan Ginsberg explains in this video, SSDI payments come from tax money that you have paid into the system while working, whereas SSI functions as a welfare program and does not depend on work credits (Note: Not affiliated with Social Security In 30 Minutes or publisher i30 Media Corporation). You cannot generate work credits from collecting SSI so a long-time SSI recipient cannot suddenly become eligible for SSDI.
